Turner Broadcasting - Getting a Baseball Fix on the Dish
Despite the recent shakeup in the television broadcasting of the Atlanta Braves, Dish Network Satellite television has you covered, and has all of the games of the much respected, but now faltering team. With Dish Network, there is no reason to miss a game, even if you no longer live, or have never lived in the Atlanta region. The Braves have fans all across the country, since Ted Turner had the great idea years ago to broadcast his team¡¯s games as far and wide as possible.
Fox Sports recently purchased the channel Turner South, the premiere station for those that love the South, those that want to learn more about it, and those living away from there that need a dose of good Southern culture of cooking, hot humidity, humor and Atlanta Braves. While the Braves had their worst June in franchise history, (6 wins¡ª21 losses!) the faithful fans are hoping the recent turn around could mean that the Braves will persevere for a record 15 Division Championships. Although the purchase of Turner South by Fox resulted in the alteration of the announcers of the games, there is still a good hometown perspective provided by the able voices of Bob Rathburn and Jeff Torborg. As a special treat for Brave¡¯s fan in the early and mid-nineties, the great outfielder Ron Gant is sometimes featured as an announcer. His experience of playing with the team gives him excellent insight into the Atlanta game in general, and some of the Braves players such as Chipper Jones and the manager Bobby Cox. Fans of the game, who grew used to the announcers Joe Simpson, Skip Caray, Don Sutton, and Pete Van Weiren, can still see them on TBS (Turner Broadcasting System) also available on Dish Network. Their particular brand of dry humor, wry insight, and friendly jabbing has endeared them to legions of fans from the West Coast to Turner Field. Now that we don¡¯t get to see them as often, they are missed. Some viewers can watch the video feed on Fox Sports Net or Turner South and listen to their favorite announcers on a local radio station that carries the Braves. Also, XM Satellite Radio carries every game of every Major League Game, so there are many avenues to get the Braves. Skip and Pete have been with the Braves for a long time. Pete Van Weiren, for example, has been there since 1976! Dish Network is the sports leader, and have many other baseball games. Getting your Braves fix with Dishnetwork is the best way for any fan to get the best baseball experience. Here¡¯s hoping the Braves can get back on track and start winning two out of three, or at least split more series. Andruw Jones is headed back to the All-Star Game this year, and he will be accompanied by the wildly talented young catcher Brian McCann, and the sharp Edgar Renteria. McCann is as big a surprise as Jeff Francoeur was last year, when he was hitting well over .400 for a while. Catch all the action on Dish Network.

Making waves in broadcasting: when opportunities came for Cathy Hughes to move her life from teenage single mother to owner of radio and TV stations, she was ready. Here, she shares lessons learned
I don't think that bad things happen; I think you're faced with challenges. I was 16 when I got pregnant; my son was born when I was 17. My mother and everyone else saw it as terrible--the end of my life. Mom wanted me to have an abortion and continue my education, but I wanted to have the baby. Now everybody, especially Morn, says thank God that I didn't have the abortion. My son, Alfred Liggins III, was the greatest blessing I ever received because he made me think beyond myself. I never dreamed a dream of my personal success; I dreamed of my son's not becoming a statistic. And now he works with me as the CEO and president of Radio One.
I had a variety of jobs before I arrived at Howard University, where I became the general sales manager and then general manager of its radio station, WHUR. At my next job, at Washington, D.C.'s WYCB, the first 24-hour gospel station, I got the opportunity to build a radio station from the ground up--and then the owners ran out of money. They wanted me to get them a loan. I replied that if I did shop a loan for them I wanted a piece of the company. They told me that if I thought I was so smart, I should go and buy my own radio station. It was as if a light went off in my head. That's when I went into business for myself.
I've had some financially dark days. In 1983, about three years into owning my first radio station, in D.C., I lost everything. For about 18 months I ended up sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor of the radio station and washing up in the public bathroom every morning. But I survived, with the help of two African-American brothers at Syncom Management Co., my lead investor. It took me seven years to dig out of debt, and then I made all my investors rich when I went public in 1999. Our stock opened at $24 and went to $92 the first year. Now I have more than 2,000 employees; about 1,600 of them are Black.

The Evolving Technology: Satellite TV Broadcasting by SBC Dish Network and DirecTV
With more than 20 millions subscribers in United States, satellite TV broadcasting surely is a big business. The growth of satellite TV business is so fast and we believe even the big players - Dish Network and DirecTV (Direct TV) did not expect this much at start.
Since satellite TV was invented, there were few types of satellite systems commercialized in the U.S. market. The first type has been around since the late 1970s and early 1980s. These satellite dishes are about six to 12 feet across and require a lot of yard space. These devices are called TVRO satellite systems. These systems are still available today.
People who own TVRO systems are required to have a descrambler. Descramblers are either purchased as separate hardware or they are sometimes inside of the receiver. In addition to having a descrambler, an owner of one of these systems must subscribe to the channels he or she wishes to view. TVRO systems also provide a variety of free channels. These satellites are required to move to locations where various satellites are in space so the signal can be received.
As DirecTV stepped in to the satellite TV business, 18-inch satellite dishes were introduced. DirecTV was the first company to provide 18-inch satellite dishes with all digital quality to their customers. It was also the first company to provide a national system with an interactive on-screen program guide. Later as Dish Network, who also uses the same systems, 18-inch dish became very popular and you can see them everywhere in the country. The 18-inch satellite dishes are operating using DBS, which stands for Direct Broadcast Satellite. Broadcasts are received from high frequency satellites that allow signals to be picked up on small dishes. The dishes used by DirecTV and Dish Network is not required to move.
As the technology evolves, programming and equipment continue to improve. Thanks to the ever-improving tech and fierce market competition between Dish Network and DirecTV; new satellite TV customers now receive wide choices of programming selection, topnotch picture quality, and unbelievable free-bargains from satellite service providers. You can compare satellite TV systems and find the one that provides the service you need. DirecTV and Dish Network are both popular services.

Internet Radio Broadcasting - About Bitrates
Streaming live audio involves using bitrates. What are bitrates? Bitrate is the bandwidth used to send a stream to the listener. If you are going to broadcast via the internet you must choose a bitrate to send the content to the listener. When choosing bitrate you must take into consideration your target audience. Will my listeners be using a broadband connection such as dsl or cable, or will they be using a dial up connection.
Streaming at a bitrate higher than the listener can download results in buffering. This basically means the stream is stopped while the listeners player downloads enough of the stream to resume playing. Obviously the listener will not want to continue listening to the stream if he has to wait 30 seconds or so in the middle of a song.
Generally a dial up listener can listen to a stream that broadcasts between 8kbs and 32kbs without experiencing buffering depending on the individual listeners connection. Dial up modems can accomodate a maximum band width of 56k although the actual bitrate can vary from 21k to around 52k dependant on the phone line.
Broadband listeners can listen to audio streams at a much higher bitrate. The highest bitrate recommended to stream music to broadband listeners is 128kbs. Why? Music cd's are recorded at 128kbs. Any streaming above this bitrate is just a waste of your bandwidth. Of course you can choose any rate between 8kbs and 128kbs to stream to broadband. Rule of thumb is the higher the bitrate the better the quality of the stream although there are several other factors to consider which I will address in my next article.
Whats the alternative if you wish to include multiple bitrates? The alternative is to get stream hosting that allows you to broadcast at multiple bitrates. Many stream hosts offer packages that include several different bitrates to effectively let you stream to a larger audience. You send the stream from your computer to said stream server and it sends the stream to your listeners at the multiple bitrates. You can also send your stream to multiple stream servers if you choose in the event that one stream server fails, your stream will still be up and running.
Internet Radio Broadcasting - What's the Best Bitrate
There is a lot of discussion and disagreement among internet broadcaster about the best bitrate to use in order to get the best music quality. This article will address this topic and the other factors that affect sound quality.
Although it is widely believed that the higher the stream bitrate the better the streaming quality there are other factors involved. One important factor is the stream encoder. There are many options depending on what software you are using to encode your stream. For intance you could create a stream that is 128kbs stereo which sends the stream at 44khz. This would create a high quality broadband stream for your listeners. You can create a similar stream at lower bitrates as well.
So why use anything other setting? Because 128kbs stereo doesn't necessarily give your listeners the best sound experience. In my testing a lower bitrate like 64kbs encoded in mono can produce as good or better sound quality than the 128kbs stereo stream. Every computer doesn't play your stream the same. On an average computer with two speakers quite often the mono stream will be a better listening experience. I recently received an email from a new internet broadcaster. He wanted to know why my stream at 16kbs sounded better than his 64kbs stereo stream. My 16kbs stream is using mono at 16khz. It produces the best possible 16kbs listener experience in my opinion.
The bottom line is bigger isn't always better. If you have a broadcast stream experiment with differnt bitrates and encoders. Try mono and stereo. Listen to your stream on different computers and speaker systems. Try to be the listener and experience what they will hear. This is the best way to decide on your bitrate and encoding.

Peer to Peer Internet Video Broadcasting
Unlike standard television broadcasting, there are a limited number of viewers that an Internet television station can accommodate. These limitations are determined by the amount of bandwidth the network media server has available. A popular Internet television station would require large amounts of bandwidth to provide the broadcast to a large viewing audience.
Peer to Peer (Commonly referred to as P2P) broadcasting allows viewers using specialized software to re-distribute the media broadcasts. This eliminates the need to utilize costly centralized media servers to distribute the broadcast and results in cost savings for bandwidth consumption.
Any size business or group can establish an effective media broadcast presence without the huge costs normally associated with Internet broadcasting. Using this method, only a few data streams are required for a global Internet broadcast distribution.
P2P Internet broadcasting provides extremely bandwidth friendly results and can support a virtually unlimited number of users. This method also provides effective security against Denial Of Service (DOS) attacks which can cripple a centralized server network architecture.
There are both commercial and non commercial options that offer P2P broadcast ability for Internet television.
This article will cover free open source software.
Open source is an initiative that allows people to have access to the source code of software. This is the actual nuts and bolts that allow the software to operate. This initiative also allows people the ability to redistribute and or modify the source code thus allowing improvements and adaptations of the software.
Peercast
Peercast is a P2P media broadcast application that is available for the Windows, Unix and Mac operating systems. It is compatible with Shoutcast, Icecast and Windows Media streaming protocols.
The software was originally designed to use Gnutella as a basis for broadcast distribution. The software now uses a hierarchal topology for media broadcast distribution. This new method provides greater scalability and more data organization.
Broadcast station data is collected by the YP directory. This data is continuously updated by individual broadcasters. Listeners / viewers (client software) provide the connection points between themselves, the broadcasters and others.
Each broadcaster has the option of including a digital signature to enable media broadcast authentication. This will prevent their broadcasts from being hijacked and replaced with alternative material.
The following video codecs are supported by Peercast: VP3, VP6, Theora and WMV. It can also be used for audio broadcasting and can be configured to use several audio codecs. The software can be used to broadcast individual static media files as well.
Hardware network routers use Network Address Translation to provide internal IP addresses for computers within that network. Traffic flowing through NAT must be converted from internal IP addresses to external IP addresses. P2P traffic routing through NAT usually requires software port forwarding to bypass NAT. Peercast is NAT friendly software and requires no special port forwarding.
A plug-in is available for the popular Winamp media player. (Winamp versions 2.x and 5.x) This can be installed and used by clients to easily receive a Peercast station.
